I’ll start off with Mac Miller who may have the most to prove. Mac’s career has been held by his successful mixtapes. From K.I.D.S. to Macadelic, Mac has shown that his song topics can vary from being very deep to very fun. Despite the success of his mixtapes, his debut album Blue Slide Park did not do well with the critics. Receiving only 3.5 out of 5 stars from Rolling Stone and a 4 out 10 from Spin, Blue Slide Park could have done so much better. While I personally have not seen much promotion for Watching Movies with the Sound Off, Mac’s sophomore album has the potential to be great. The singles “Watching Movies” and “Goosebumpz” have definitely not disappointed. As of recent, he has been spending more time around TDE and Odd Future. We can only hope that the company of Kendrick and Tyler can help Mac show his full potential. Mac Miller has the skills to be great but his impending greatness is up to him.

Secondly: J.Cole. In 2011, he released his debut album Cole World: The Sideline Story, which was a critical success. His work received 4.5 out of 5 stars from Rolling Stone and an 8 out of 10 from Spin. J. Cole and Mac Miller have had about the same time off between their freshman and sophomore albums. However, J. Cole has taken it upon himself to produce for himself. During this time, J. Cole kept his name relevant by occasionally releasing free songs. J. Cole’s critics have said that his lyrics no longer come has hard has they used. Whenever someone is doubtful of Cole, they should definitely listen to his verse on Kanye West’s “Looking For Trouble.” The single “Power Trip,” featuring Miguel, can be heard on any radio station and I’m sure you’ve seen its lyrics in a status or tweet. J. Cole then linked up with legendary group TLC for “Crooked Smile.” After streaming Born Sinner, J. Cole had to deal with a reality of today’s day and age. Born Sinner prematurely leaked. Admittedly, I have already heard the album and J. Cole should be proud of what he has made. Not only has he lyrically expressed his emotions and past experiences, but he is also responsible for the instrumentals backing them. Listening for the many samples used was one of the most fun parts of hearing the album and I wouldn’t be surprised one bit if he started producing for other artists. Despite being leaked, this work deserves to be purchased and J. Cole deserves the support.

Lastly: Kanye West a.k.a. Yeezus. While he may have the least to prove, he has caused the most hype. Whoever is in charge of marketing (if it’s not Kanye himself) surely deserves a promotion. It all began with Kanye tweeting “June Eighteen.” ‘Ye the projected “New Slaves” across 66 locations and progressively added more projections. He immediately followed up the projections with an Saturday Night Light performance of “New Slaves” and “Black Skinhead.” The album title was finally confirmed, as was the artwork – nothing. The album will simply be a CD in a clear case, which, by the way, is not available for pre order. This means any one planning on owning Yeezus will have to purchase it the day of. While I am still confused by this tactic, it may be a defense against an early leak of the album, as Kanye is no stranger to beating leaks. He and Jay-Z effectively prevented Watch The Throne from leaking, a feat that seemed impossible in the digital age. Kanye does not have to prove much musically, but Yeezus may be a reminder to those who have taken it upon themselves to focus on the recent changes to his personal life. Dating Kim Kardashian and fathering her child has become the topic of discussion and, hopefully, Yeezus will turn peoples’ attention back towards what Kanye is known for – the music.

One must ask: “Is it smart to drop an album the same day as Kanye?” 50 Cent already knows the correct answer. 50 contested Kanye’s Graduation with the stipulation of retiring if West sold more than him. In the end, Graduation sold almost a millions more copies than 50′s Curtis. This is not to say that Cole and Mac should be overlooked simply because Kanye is also releasing an album as they have already shown that they can hold their own as artists. Besides, who wouldn’t want to hear three great new albums on one day?
